Moving from Victim to Survivor to Thriver

Moving from victim to survivor to thriver with Svava Brooks

In this episode of The Grass Gets Greener podcast, I'm joined by Svava Brooks of Educate4Change. Svava joins me to share her story of how she has overcome childhood abuse to become not only a survivor, but a thriver, and how she is helping others do the same.

The Details

Traumatic experience:

Svava was emotionally, physically and sexually abused by her step-father while growing up. She also witnessed domestic violence in the household.

Effects of the traumatic experience:

Svava tried to be perfect and overachieve. She got involved in drinking and smoking and became promiscuous. She had a hard time feeling any emotions. She also experienced shame and self-hatred. She had attachment issues and became a people-pleaser.

Overcoming the traumatic experience:

Getting involved in a support group started Svava down her path of healing. She read a lot of books to educate herself. She began meditation and energy healing practices. She was also able to forgive herself and those who hurt her. And she focused on taking care of herself inside and out.

What Svava does today:

Svava is an instructor and facilitator for Darkness to Light. She is also a life coach for sexual abuse survivors as well as a Reiki practitioner.

Final Question:

Given what you know now, if you could go back to when you were going through the tough times and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?

Svava's Answer: You are not alone.
