The Details
Traumatic experience:
While Janine was still a very young child, her parents had a very volatile relationship that ended when her father died while she was six years old. Janine's mother was unable to provide her a stable home as they moved frequently, so she attended seven different schools throughout the years, becoming inured to the idea of having a best friend as the friendships faded on each move to a new place. At the age of 12 or 13, Janine's stepfather came into her room naked, which caused her to become hyper vigilant about her personal safety.
Janine's mother, a trauma survivor herself, had violent outbursts, sometimes culminating in physical abuse. She also suffered from debilitating bouts of depression, leaving Janine to become the caregiver for the family and her younger sister.
At the age of eighteen, after receiving her driver's license, Janine and a friend were carjacked, kidnapped and almost raped at gunpoint.
Effects of the traumatic experience:
Janine dealt with anger issues, thinking that having a bad temper was just something women in her family had; she became hyper vigilant, and always felt different from other people. After the carjacking, Janine started suffering from PTSD. It was only after the incident that Janine's mother opened up to her about her own trauma, and Janine realized that if she did not get help, she wouldn't be able to break the cycle of violence in her family.
Overcoming the traumatic experience:
Janine went to a psychologist to aid in her recovery and eventually studied psychology herself in college. After receiving her degree, she went to London to learn how to become a Certified Rapid Transformation Therapist. While studying, Janine was also able to receive the therapy herself and found that it made a massive difference in her life.
What Janine does today: Janine is a Certified Rapid Transformational Therapist and Hypnotherapist.
Final Question:
Given what you know now, if you could go back to when you were going through the tough times and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?
Janine's Answer: You're not alone.
