The Details
Traumatic experience:
Carol-Ann grew up in a culture that made her feel the need to be perfect and to be a people pleaser. As an adult, this contributed to her ending up in three emotionally abusive marriages that spanned 26 years of her life.
Effects of the traumatic experience:
The emotional abuse damaged Carol-Ann's self-confidence and self-esteem and affected her sense of self. She started to close herself off and was living in a way where she couldn't be her true self all of the time.
Overcoming the traumatic experience:
Carol-Ann took a course called Your Year of Miracles which began her journey of doing deep inner work to help her understand why she was getting into abusive relationships. Also, she became very aware of her thoughts and focused on practicing self-love as well as visualizing what her new life would look like.
What Carol-Ann does today: Carol-Ann works in the human rights area for the Government of Ontario, Canada.
Final Question:
Given what you know now, if you could go back to when you were going through the tough times and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?
Carol-Ann's Answer: Listen to your intuition.
