In this episode of The Grass Gets Greener podcast, I'm joined by Michael Skinner of MSkinnerMusic.com. Michael joins me to share his story of how he's gone from growing up in an abusive home to being stigmatized for his mental illness to becoming the survivor and advocate he is today.

The Details
Traumatic experience:
Michael was physically, emotionally, psychologically and sexually abused by his parents who were involved in a pedophile ring as he was growing up. He then lost two brothers to suicide while his two other siblings disowned him when he began sharing his story. He's also been stigmatized and treated poorly by the mental health system, which has been traumatic in its own right.
Effects of the traumatic experience:
Michael had a nervous breakdown at the age of 39 after recovering memories from his childhood. He suffers with complex PTSD and major depression. He's also dealt with anger and difficulty being in relationships.
Overcoming the traumatic experience:
Playing and listening to music has been a major factor in Michael's healing journey. Other things that have helped include, spending time in nature, cooking, eating healthy, consuming inspirational content and peer support.
What Michael does today:
Michael is a musician, speaker, writer and advocate.
Final Question:
Given what you know now, if you could go back to when you were going through the tough times and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?
Michael's Answer: You're not a bad person and you are stronger than you think.
