The Details
Traumatic experience:
Lisa grew up in what appeared to be a normal family but Lisa's mom battled with addictions and that led to a dysfunctional environment in the home. She also experienced some physical, emotional and verbal abuse. Lisa felt fearful for most of her childhood as a result.
Effects of the traumatic experience:
Lisa began drinking when she was 12 years old and drank more heavily when she was 15. She continued to battle with her alcohol addiction until the age of 29. The drinking led Lisa to engage in some destructive behaviors and make some bad decisions, including a marriage that was unhealthy. Lisa struggled to finish college and struggled to maintain relationships as well.
Overcoming the traumatic experience:
Having a horse while growing up kept Lisa from serious addiction in her teenage years. When Lisa decided to become sober she used the 12-step program in her recovery. Lisa had a structured life for her first three years of sobriety and that helped her stay focused. She also came to accept that she was an alcoholic and that helped her shift her mindset.
What Lisa does today: Lisa is an author and registered nurse.
Final Question:
Given what you know now, if you could go back to when you were going through the tough times and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?
Lisa's Answer: Evaluate your life, behavior, and actions and be honest with yourself.
