In this episode, I’m joined by Michael Mapes of Graveyard Innovation. Michael joins me to share his story of how he’s been able to create success in business and in life after being bullied growing up and is now sharing his message to inspire others to be able to do the same.

The Details
Traumatic experience:
Michael started being bullied in sixth grade after moving to a new school in a different state. As a mild mannered and shy child, he was an easy target for the bullies. Michael was called names (queer, faggot, etc.) and pushed around at school. His mother would try to get the school to intervene, but he was accused of just trying to get attention. In seventh grade, Michael started missing school and his grades dropped. The bullying continued through middle school and into high school where things began to improve; a teacher observed the bullying and let him know that it wasn’t okay, allowing Michael to start building his confidence.
Effects of the traumatic experience:
Harassment and bullying caused a shrinking sense of self and a mistrust of personal relationships. Michael turned to alcohol and drugs to numb the pain, which negatively impacted his romantic relationships. He became depressed and anxious, culminating in a suicide attempt at the age of 19.
Overcoming the traumatic experience:
Michael started going to therapy after his suicide attempt. He also started meditating, which he still does to this day.
What Michael does today: Michael is the founder of Graveyard Innovation, Co-Founder at The Bisong/Mapes Speaking Agency, and an author.
Final Question:
Given what you know now, if you could go back to when you were going through the tough times and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?
Michael's Answer: Everything you are or think you need to change will help you succeed in the future.
