The Details
Traumatic experience:
Laura was one of eight siblings who grew up with a very abusive father and a mother unable to step in to stop the abuse. Laura's father made her feel unwanted and unlovable. At the age of eleven, after a very violent situation, Laura was sent away to foster care and her siblings dispersed among relatives.
Effects of the traumatic experience:
Laura turned to self-defeating behaviors. She became an alcoholic, an overeater, and a drug user. She became very overweight, which just reinforced the message she received as a child that she was not worthy of being loved. At 18, Laura moved to California where she continued her behavior patterns until she was 24 years old and suicidal.
Overcoming the traumatic experience:
A chance meeting with a woman in a bar, while she was working, became a turning point for Laura when she was 25 years old. She received a strong message of love and support from the woman who encouraged her to take the necessary steps to heal.
Laura started going to AA and OA and eventually lost over 100 pounds and began a journey of self-healing.
What Laura does today: Laura is a coach, public speaker, and author.
Final Question:
Given what you know now, if you could go back to when you were going through the tough times and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?
Laura's Answer: Whatever that belief in a higher power was that you had - trust that belief; it is leading you somewhere and you’ll be okay.
