In this episode, I’m joined by Dr. Rose Maina, author of The Book of Rose: Rituals of Self-Empowerment. Rose joins me to share her story of how she’s been able to dismantle the programming of her abuse to get her life back and empower others to do the same.

The Details
Traumatic experience:
Rose is originally from East Africa where she was born into a private sex ring, where she was sexually assaulted and harassed for the first 23 years of her life. Rose continued to be abused spiritually, mentally, and emotionally after she was no longer in the abusive environment due to being ritualized, brainwashed, and programmed by her main abuser.
Effects of the traumatic experience:
Being sexually abused from the time she was a baby, Rose was confused about what love really was. She also missed out on the nurturing and closeness that comes from a family. Rose spent many years in self-sabotage because she wasn't used to putting herself first. Rose also struggled with trust issues for many years as well.
Overcoming the traumatic experience:
Rose was inspired by Barack Obama becoming president and decided in that moment that she would become the president of her own life. Rose began with the process of reparenting herself. And journaling became a very important tool in Rose's healing. Rose has also used meditation that she learned from Native Americans, after spending four months with them in Idaho. Rose believes what has helped her the most is her strong belief that anything can be changed. In addition, she's also made sure to take time for herself daily.
What Rose does today: Rose teaches Early Childhood Education and Child Development courses at 2 and 4 year colleges.
Final Question:
Given what you know now, if you could go back to when you were going through the tough times and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?
Rose's Answer: Be less self-critical.
