The Details
Traumatic experience:
Perry was sexually abused at the age of ten for about a year by his grandfather, but was really unaware that it was wrong. When Perry was able to finally talk to his parents, he never had to see his grandfather again and he put the situation to the back of his mind.
Effects of the traumatic experience:
When Perry was a teenager, he went through a period of self-hate and judgement. As he got older, Perry blamed himself for what happened and saw himself as the villain instead of the victim.
Overcoming the traumatic experience:
When Perry’s father passed away, Perry spent about a year reflecting on his life and realized his father used alcohol to numb pain and stay a victim. Perry decided he wasn’t going to go down that same path. He was finally able to see that he had been manipulated and that his grandfather was responsible for the abuse.
When Perry attended a mastermind event, he was suddenly compelled with the need to share his story. Perry was thanked for sharing rather than be outcast from the group, which he previously thought would happen if he told someone. Perry then went on to share his story on social media.
What Perry does today: Perry is a personal branding coach.
Final Question:
Given what you know now, if you could go back to when you were going through the tough times and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?
Perry's Answer: You don’t need to live as the victim of your story - its going to end soon, and when it does end, live as a hero and not a victim of your story.
