Jessica was emotionally and physically abused by her mom while growing up until the age of 14. She was also sexually abused by someone close to the family and was later assaulted twice by two other family members. Jessica experienced bullying throughout her time at school as well.
Effects of the traumatic experience:
Jessica was doing okay once she left home but the two assaults set her back and left her feeling broken. She ended up developing a severe form of OCD that interfered with her ability to function normally. She also started experiencing symptoms of PTSD related to the abuse she experienced growing up.
Overcoming the traumatic experience:
Jessica's OCD got so bad that she decided to do something about it and went into therapy. In particular, she went through cognitive behavioral therapy which had a dramatic impact on her symptoms and has allowed her heal. Reading books to learn about OCD also helped Jessica in her healing. Art and music helped her get through tough times as well.
What Jessica does today: Jessica is a diversional therapist and blogger.
Given what you know now, if you could go back to when you were going through the tough times and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?
Jessica's Answer: Keep going and stay strong because it does get better.
