The Details
Traumatic experience:
Berni has been through some tough times in her life, from childhood molestation to domestic abuse, but it was in 2008 when she reached her lowest point. After being frustrated with her job, she decided to quit with no backup plan and fell ill two weeks later. After being hospitalized for 7 days, she was released without a diagnosis. She believes her illness was due to stress. She didn't know what to do next and felt like she had lost her identity because she didn't have a job title anymore.
Effects of the traumatic experience:
After getting sick and being without a job, Berni started feeling not good enough, a feeling she experienced all too often growing up. This led her to become very depressed and feeling hopeless for the first time in her life. She had thoughts of just letting herself wither away.
Overcoming the traumatic experience:
A turning point for Berni was when she decided to take action and started volunteering. This allowed her to start feeling good about herself again. She was able to do this because she had changed her mindset about what success looked like and how she defined herself.
What Berni does today:
Berni is a coach, consultant, speaker, author, podcaster, and a trainer in sales and marketing. She helps people kick fear to the curb, stand up, speak out and change their world.
Final Question:
Given what you know now, if you could go back to when you were going through the tough times and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?
Berni's Answer: “You can only become truly accomplished at something you love. Don’t make money your goal. Instead pursue the things you love doing and then do them so well that people can’t take their eyes off of you.” Maya Angelou
