The Details
Traumatic experience:
Leslie was sexually abused by her grandfather from the age of about 4 until 7 when he died suddenly of a heart attack.
Effects of the traumatic experience:
Leslie got involved in drugs and alcohol and was very promiscuous when she was a young adult. She found herself in abusive relationships. She's also dealt with feelings of rage and experiencing night terrors. She even blamed herself at times for what happened.
Overcoming the traumatic experience:
Sharing her story, therapy, meditation, journaling and being in community with others who have been abused has helped Leslie to heal. She's also stopped drinking and has even found some healing in watching certain television shows.
What Leslie does today:
Leslie teaches college English online, is a freelance writer, and writes her newsletter called Our Daily Zen.
Final Question:
Given what you know now, if you could go back to when you were going through the tough times and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?
Leslie's Answer: Trust yourself and your own memories and keep talking until someone believes you.
