The Details
Traumatic experience:
Sandra was brought up in local authority in the UK. As a young child in care, Sandra was picked on because she was different than the other children – she didn't just go along with the status quo and she had the opportunity to spend weekends with her mother. The bullying manifested in pushing, name calling, and spiteful innuendos. Things came to a head when she was alone with six other children and being punched in the face during the melee. Not following the crowd seemed to be the catalyst.
Later in life, Sandra had a boss who had anger issues and was unable to be civil to her after the first few months. Over time, she felt more and more powerless. One day, she'd had enough when it drove her to tears and then found the strength to stand up to him.
Effects of the traumatic experience:
Sandra became less trusting and more guarded to safeguard her vulnerabilities. Until she stood up to her overbearing boss, she would feel physically ill going into work each morning.
Overcoming the traumatic experience:
Sandra came to a point where she could stand up for herself and say, “enough." She found that music was cathartic while grieving her mother's death and, later, healing from a stroke. She compiled poems she had written over time into her book allowing her to not only heal from the bullying, but to also hopefully inspire others to find their own healing.
What Sandra does today: Sandra is a singer, songwriter, and poet.
Final Question:
Given what you know now, if you could go back to when you were going through the tough times and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?
Sandra's Answer: Walk away the moment your instinct kicks in that something isn't right.
