The Details
Traumatic experience:
Skyler grew up in an upper middle class family that appeared perfect on the outside but on the inside, her dad was abusive and he sexually abused her from the age of three until around 18. Skyler was also trafficked to her dad's friends during her teenage years. Her mom was also very sick dealing with her own issues and she mentally, physically and emotionally abused Skyler. Overall, Skyler grew up in an environment where she didn't have very much control.
Effects of the traumatic experience:
As a result of the situation that Skyler grew up in, she ended up dealing with PTSD, depression and anxiety.
Overcoming the traumatic experience:
Being able to share her story and be supported was something that helped Skyler begin to heal. Going to therapy was also important for her. Skyler also did inner child work to understand her triggers so that she could better deal with them. She also reported her dad for the abuse, and even though nothing came of it, doing so allowed her to be able to let go.
What Skyler does today:
Skyler is an advocate, teacher, and mentor for other survivors.
Final Question:
Given what you know now, if you could go back to when you were going through the tough times and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?
Skyler's Answer: It's okay to choose you.
