The Details
Traumatic experience:
Dan grew up in a family where his father was alcoholic and generational alcoholism and trauma existed. He was also traumatized by the fact that he needed testosterone shots to help him grow.
Effects of the traumatic experience:
Dan developed a negative sense of self along with body dysmorphia. He had trouble in relationships, felt as if he didn't fit in or belong, and was suicidal. He ended up turning to alcohol and drug use to cope.
Overcoming the traumatic experience:
Acknowledging and sharing his thoughts and feelings and getting the support he needed was one of the biggest factors in Dan's recovery. Getting sober and going through the Twelve Step program was also very helpful for him.
What Dan does today:
Dan is an internationally recognized author, thought leader, and expert on men's relationships and masculinity.
Final Question:
Given what you know now, if you could go back to when you were going through the tough times and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?
Dan's Answer: You're going to be okay and you're going to get through this.
