Michael had a traumatic childhood and spent time in and out of group homes and foster care. There was alcohol and drug use in Michael's home. He also witnessed his mom being abused as well.
Effects of the traumatic experience:
Michael used his traumatic childhood experiences to create a positive impact in the lives of others. Rather than dwelling on what happened to him, he used his past as motivation to fuel the work that he does in helping to improve the lives of others.
Overcoming the traumatic experience:
Michael had counseling as a child and that helped him to cope at the time. He's also had a strong faith in God. Serving in the military was helpful in his healing as well. In addition to that, he's been very driven and has used his vision to propel him forward. He also has a positive mindset. The support of others has been crucial for him as well.
What Michael does today: Michael is a US Army Veteran, author, and candidate for U.S. Congress.
Given what you know now, if you could go back to when you were going through the tough times and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?
Michael's Answer: Don't lose hope, don't quit, and believe in what's inside you.
