The Details
Traumatic experience:
John was sexually abused by both of his parents and their friends from around the ages of 4-16. He was also sexually abused later in life when he was in college.
Effects of the traumatic experience:
John had repressed a lot of his memories and before they came back to him, he started having feelings that he couldn't explain, like feeling paranoid about everything. After recovering the repressed memories, John went from being a prolific speaker to having a chronic stutter and he had trouble being in crowds. He also struggled to form new relationships and started having memory problems.
Overcoming the traumatic experience:
John woke up one day with the realization that he would always have to deal with what he experienced, and that allowed him to begin to heal. Going to the gym, focusing on having a healthy diet, listening to positive music, and just being aware of how his body, mind and soul are connected have all helped John in his healing.
What John does today: John is a speaker and advocate in the areas of sexual abuse and human trafficking.
Final Question:
Given what you know now, if you could go back to when you were going through the tough times and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?
John's Answer: It'll be okay and it'll all work out in the end.
