The Details
Traumatic experience:
Jeremy experienced physical, psychological and sexual abuse starting from when he was about two and lasted until he was 18 years old. The abuse stopped when his mother cut him out of her life when he was 18. He started therapy at the age of nine.
Effects of the traumatic experience:
Having a one-time experience of trauma is terrible, but Jeremy's abuse happened over a period of years, so it felt normal to him. He was trained to be afraid throughout his childhood and learned to subjugate his needs to those of others. When Jeremy was overwhelmed he would just disconnect.
Jeremy felt unworthy of love and had trouble establishing and maintaining healthy relationships. Jeremy struggled when he became a father as he didn't have good role models. His children would behave in a way at times that would inadvertently trigger Jeremy, which would cause him to respond with anger.
Overcoming the traumatic experience:
After two years of profound depression, Jeremy learned to really work with his therapy. Jeremy began to identify his triggers and was able to explore how the past affected him and gain control back. Doing the work helped him feel that he was doing something good. Although he sees a therapist regularly, Jeremy still finds that he has good days and bad days.
Writing daily and listening to music have also been therapeutic and very important to his recovery.
What Jeremy does today: Jeremy is a marriage and family therapist as well as an author.
Final Question:
Given what you know now, if you could go back to when you were going through the tough times and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?
Jeremy's Answer: I would give myself hope that life WILL get better.
